Research

Each fellow is required to complete or show adequate progress on a research project during their year of fellowship as a requirement for graduation.
The faculty are actively involved in and looking for future research projects, especially ones where a fellow can step in and complete work to publish in a year.

Past and Current Research Projects

A Prospective Study of Baseline and Post-concussion Oculomotor Videonystagmography (VNG) in Athletes

  • IRB approved Spring 2013 study started Summer of 2013

Vitamin D Levels in the Student Athlete, Can Identification and Treatment Help Prevent Stress Fractures

  • Currently ongoing study, started Fall of 2012

Electrocardiographic Screening in NCAA athletes:  A Multicenter Feasibility Trial in Division I Programs

  • 10 NCAA Division 1 programs evaluated and compared the accuracy of cardiovascular screening in NCAA athletes using a standardized history, physical exam(PE) and electrocardiogram
  • Study oversight University of Washington

Diagnosis of fractures in the Emergency Department using ultrasound Project looking at the utility of bedside ultrasound to evaluate for long bone fractures in the Emergency Department

  • Currently working on submission to IRB (Institutional Review Board) Chief Investigators: Anna Waterbrook Co-investigators:  Albert Fiorello, Charlene Shaughnessy, Angela McKellar, and Carrie Adrion

Exercise Induced Bronchospasm

  • Funded in part with a grant from GlaxoSmithKline
  • This is an ongoing research project which has lead to 2 presentations at the American Medical Society of Sports Medicine National Conference
  • The initial hypothesis was that:  Exercise Induced Bronchospasm at the NCAA division I collegiate level is overdiagnosed, while poorly controlled asthma resulting in exercise-related symptoms in this same population may be underdiagnosed.
  • Chief Investigators:  D Millward, S Paul, M Brown.
  • The first presented part of this project, the pilot study:  “The Diagnosis of Asthma and Exercise Induced Bronchospasm in Division I Athletes”; compared Eucapnic Voluntary Hyperventilation among athletes self identified as having exercise induced bronchospasm or asthma and to secondarily assess for inadequately controlled asthma by the use of exhaled nitrous oxide. Principle Investigators;  J Hagan, D Millward, S Paul, M Brown, E Olvey, R Cohen, D Porter, M Stilson
  • The second presented part of this research:  “The Usefulness of Using Exhaled Nitric Oxide in Predicting Exercise-Induced Bronchoconstriction in the Division I College Athlete” Looked at whether measured exhaled nitric oxide can predict exercise-induced bronchoconstriction in the Division 1 college athlete?
  • Chief Investigators:  JP Hansen, D Millward, S Paul, M Brown, E Olvey, R Cohen, D Porter
  • The research is ongoing with expansion of the population being studied.  We are attempting to increase the ‘n’ of our study in regards to the exhaled nitrous oxide and eucapnic voluntary hyperventilation testing

The effect of Breath Builder TM on Various Lung Functions and Musical Performance Abilities of Clarinet Players

  • This is looking at whether a breath-enhancing device can increase measured lung function and performance in clarinetists. Chief Investigators:  W Mazon, S Paul, D Millward
